griping about "la gripe".

ah, day 3 of being sick with the flu and it sucks. It feels like Mr. Flu went on a date with Ms.  Bronchitis and theyre just chilling out in my body for a bit. This weekend we have to actually move into our new apartment no matter if I'm super sick or not. Im hoping Bryan doesn't get the flu because I hear it's really contagious. There's a rumor going around that they may shut down all public places next week because of "Gripe A"/ Swine Flu. Weird right.

Anyway, we've been working on the apartment non-stop for the last 2 weeks. Well mostly Bryan though, I've just painted and cleaned a little. Hes taken out the floors and done all kinds of guy stuff like rewiring things. Super super handy. Its more of his project.  So, the apartment is getting a much needed face lift. We've tracked down most of the furniture already, we're just missing a fridge which is pretty important. We've found our stuff mostly from Americans moving back to the states  and having to sell everything in a rush for cheaper. The furniture here is pretty expensive and the used furniture costs almost the same as the new furniture. It's not like back home where you look on Craigslist and you can furnish your whole apt. for $500. People hang onto and pass down their things for a while, they keep it in the family. So its not the constant, buy-sell thing going on like back home. And, there are no garage sales. Bummer.

Ya know, I don't even really feel that that awful, well yea I do, but if it wasnt for this awful nonstop violent dry cough and sore throat that feels like I swallowed chards of glass, I think I'd be alright.  Tomorrow we're supposed to go to Puerto de los Frutos in Tigre which is like a huge open air flea-market/outlet mall type place where you can find basically anything, new, pretty good quality but for really cheap and its just outside the ciy. You get there by train.  Its not like the San Antonio flea mkt where no matter what you buy, it always seems to break.  But, considering, Ive been up all night coughing watching the MJ marathon tribute, (this is my 3rd time around).  I'm not sure how tomorrows gonna pan out.  Yikes.

How do you make the throat issue feel better?
- Ive already eaten a 1/2 a kilo of sorbet at a constant flow. That only helped for a little bit, plus    I just felt like a fatty when I got to the bottom and still had a sore throat
- Done the chicken soup thing, but you cant eat chicken soup all day
- Tried hot tea with whisky and honey (the cab driver recommended it to me today)
- ried regular hot tea and maxed out at cup #5
- Gargled hot salt water, that was just gross.

Aw, now Im watching the sunrise. great. It's actually really nice though... thats an upside to being up all night.  I've set up shop in the living room on the couch and gave Bryan the bed. The other bright side of having this, since Ive had a mild fever is that I havent been cold  in 3 days which has also been nice. And eating half a kilo of ice cream would usually be considered as pathetic but I blamed it on the throat so it was necessary. So there's been some upsides to all this "gripe", it hasn't been all gripes.  :)

Migueletes 1148, 7ºA

This is a tour of our third and final apartment! No more moving :) Well we haven't actually moved in yet, we just have the keys.. it still needs some love. So we're fixing and painting and reflooring some things before we have to move in.

So this is the "before" stage

Getting Haunted by the Bad Empanada Ghost

Empanadas are a staple to the Argentines, like little pockets of love that make good cheap snacks on the go. They can be filled with anything: meat, chicken, humita (its like a cream corn pie type filling texture with pieces of red bell-peppers, it reminds me of  something youd eat during Thanksgiving) or even the boring tomato basil and cheese which is still good. Anyway, the point is that empanadas are great... until you get haunted by the food poisoning ghost in a sneaky chicken empanada. Bryan did and there was no turning back. Poor little guy was so sick all day long, like violently sick. I felt so bad for him, but was so thankful I turned down that bite of  chicken empanada he offered me.  So, that was all of Satur-day. Alba if you are reading this, don't worry, I took care of him, of course -  brought him gatorade, soup,  water and sorbet for his throat, anything he wanted pretty much. Then he came back to life during the night and had movie night with Winnie; so I went out with some friends to Devenir, a fun Brazilian bar down the street.

Caiparinhas and dancing and brazilian music all night long.  I'm that girl who has absolutely no rhythm on the dance floor, none,  but doesn't care. Plus, the music is so festive,  its hard not to just have fun and dance all night long! Then.. the best part of the night.. they brought out 5 guys with drums who started a drum circle in the middle of the dance floor! Not like highschool football halftime but like darbukas and huge bongo-like drums,  it was so perfect and so great!!  Before I knew it it was 7am and morning.  I decided it was time to go home and jump in bed with Winnie and Bryan.

Sunday me and Bryan we went to see Mel Brook's The Young Frankenstein play... or should I say El Joven Frankenstein. I was kinda skeptical about going  because the last play I went to was The Phantom of the Opera when I was 12 and I just remember it being so long. Plus this play would be in spanish without subtitles. But, the lead guy was this really famous argentine comedian, Guillermo Francella that Bryan really wanted to see. So we went and it was actually really really good! I understood about 95% of it. (Got lost on the singing, but who doesn't get lost. ) Our original seats were up higher on the second floor but the usher came to us right before the play started and said my seat was messed up so we had to move. He took us down the stairs and kept walking closer and closer to the stage and pointed to the middle 4th row.. yes! Score! Theatre night was fun.

We also moved this weekend into aparment #3, but thats a long story. Imagine a bachelor pad in the sixtys that needs some minor repairs and a little TLC.  Andddd what else what else, Monday was Flag Day so Buenos Aires was like a ghost town outside. I thought everyone was going to have their Argentine flags out or at least face paint on like we do on the 4th of July. But no, didn't see many flags.

Happy Almost Fathers Day if any dads are reading this :)

"AR-GEN-TINA"

ARGENTINA vs. COLUMBIA: On the way to the stadium, there were riot cops posted up everywhere with shields and masks and horses. Are we going into war against Columbia and I didnt get the memo? Nah, probably not, just the usually soccer security. It was so chilly outside too.  The stadium is like a sea of baby blue and white (Argentinas colors). I love it! So much team spirit all around! I think I love the crowd more than watching the game. The fans cheer with their hearts :)
When the players came out, everyone threw strips of paper-  they  bring bags of it- its like "glitter" falling  to the field. All the fan clubs proudly  have their painted banners out. Although the Columbians were only given a small portion of the stadium, their festive-ness was pretty impressive, I must say. Never stopped jumping, never stopped cheering or waving their flags and lighting fireworks. Their blue yellow and red brightly stood out in the sea of baby blue and white.  I secretely kinda wanted to be on that side for a little bit.

Final score: 1-0 Argentina. Woo!
